Weight Concern

Is a registered charity established in 1997 by a group of researchers and clinicians at University College London who recognised the necessity for an organisation addressing the needs of people who are overweight, and tackling the growing problem of obesity in the United Kingdom. Over two-thirds of adults in England are overweight or obese (Health Survey for England 2009-2011). One in five children are overweight or obese when they enter primary school, rising to one in three by the time they leave (National Child Measurement Programme, 2011/12). Obesity increases the risk of many chronic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancers, as well as increasing the potential for pyscho-social and physical disability. Founded by Jane Wardle, a Professor of Clinical Pyschology at University College London, Weight Concern's vision is to support and empower people to live a healthy lifestyle. Our mission is to improve the understanding of health professionals and the public about the causes, consequences and treatments of overweight and obesity, and act as a 'voice'  for those with first-hand experience of weight management in the UK.

Weight Concern is dedicated to providing clear evidence-based information on obesity and weight management, alongside health promotion information. Weight Concern is committed to helping people improve their health and sense of well-being by increasing access to practical information and successful weight management solutions such as 'Shape-Up' a gold-standard lifestyle weight management programme. 'Shape-Up' won a national award for weight management service of the year at the Nutrition and Health 2013 awards. The charity is actively involved in researching and developing new approaches to combating obesity, and helping to find ways to prevent weight gain. To act as a 'voice' for those who have experience of the trials and tribulations of weight management, we interact regularly with our 'Big Panel', an online cohort of adults across the UK. This user-panel provides their views and opinions on the strategic direction of the charity, as well as participating in vital academic research or surveys for the government, policy-makers and the media.

Weight Concern won the Best New Charity of the Year Award in 2002 and is funded entirely through its activities in research, programme/service delivery, fundraising, and training and education provision. Weight Concern is also a certified member of the Information Standard which means all of the health and social care information produced is deemed trustworthy and evidence-based.

Based at University College London, The Weight Concern Team involves a small team of staff, volunteer Board of Trustees, specialist freelance staff and volunteers.
